2022 has been a great year for the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC)! This has been the first year that we enjoyed the Maria de Maeztu seal of Excellence, which has uplifted our work in different ways.

We participate in a new space mission called ARRAKIHS, selected as the new fast space mission in ESA’s Science Programme, the first one led from Spain. It is designed to study the effects of dark matter on the observed galactic structures exploring the low surface brightness regime.

The Advanced Engineering Unit had a significant upgrade with an improvement of the laboratories and the services offered. In that interest, we started a local Project Office and have already or are currently hiring several new engineering positions (software, mechanical, electrical).

In addition, we held the 5th Summer School with the topic “Modified gravities, Inflation and Primordial Perturbations: theory and computing”, which lasted 2 weeks for the first time in recent years. We welcomed around 40 master and PhD students.

We gradually left behind online event celebrations and started making hybrid and face-to-face events, such us our ever-present #PizzaSeminars and outreach events like an astronomical observation at the UAB campus. On the outreach front, we continued our participation on the Magnet project with our collaboration with the Gabriel Castellà i Raich school in Igualada (Barcelona) and fostered several initiatives on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Asteroid Day, the European Researchers’ Night, Science & Technology Week and more!

2022 highlights

• ICE-CSIC researchers published a total of 313 publications: 92% of them, in 1st quartile journals.
• A total of 3 PhD theses and 6 Master theses were defended.
• We grew a lot during the last year: for the first time we passed the mark of 120 people working at the institute. There were 125 people.
• We have a new faculty member: Francisca Kemper.
• We’re a diverse institute: 46 people were from abroad and there were 28 women.
• We started 19 new projects and had another 27 ongoing.

Our research and engineering staff have achieved many important milestones.
