The ”la Caixa” Foundation awarded 105 new doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships to excellent researchers to carry out their projects at universities and research centres in Spain and Portugal. Álex Alarcón González is one of them and works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC).

After obtaining his PhD in Physics from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) in 2019, he completed a postdoctoral stay at the Argonne National Laboratory, near Chicago (United States), where he worked for four years before joining ICE-CSIC as a “La Caixa” fellow. Álex Alarcón is an observational cosmologist, with broad, multidisciplinary interests spanning the study of cosmology and galaxy formation through weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering.

In addition, he is an active member of the Dark Energy Survey, where he uses high-precision measurements of hundreds of millions of galaxies to understand the physics of galaxy formation and reveal the nature of dark matter and dark energy.

¨The Junior Leader Programme is an extraordinary opportunity that lets me pursue the research that I love back in my home country, especially after having worked abroad as a researcher for the last few years. It has allowed me to start building my own junior research group, which is helping me further develop as a researcher,¨ says Alarcón. ¨I am really thankful for this great programme that supports research in Spain and Portugal, which contributes significantly to the technologic and scientific advancement of our society. Through this programme , I hope to continue to learn about the Universe and some of its mysteries, such as the nature of Dark Energy.¨

On March 12th, La Caixa Foundation held the fellowship award ceremony at the CosmoCaixa Science Museum in Barcelona (Spain). A total of 105 researchers will develop their studies in Spain and Portugal thanks to the 65 scholarships awarded in the framework of the doctorate programme INPhINIT and the 40 fellowships awarded within the postdoctoral programme Junior Leader.
