We announce two open positions at the Institute of Space Sciences in Barcelona, which is part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Catalan Institute for Space Studies (IEEC). The positions are for a software engineer and a research engineer working in two different projects within the same research group.
The research engineer will work on codes for simulations of pulsar 3D magnetic evolution and Galactic pulsar population with Monte Carlo and Machine Learning techniques. He/she is requested to be familiar with:
- Fortran, CMake (or related build systems), code optimization, Python and Bash scripting, and HPC execution experience.
- PyTorch (or similar framework like TensorFlow), Python (proficient), and machine learning for regression and image understanding.
- For visualization: Python (Matplotlib, NumPy, PyQ) and Paraview (or any other related HPC visualization tool).
- Linux system administration and MacOS would be a plus.
The software engineer will be developing a pulsar-timing based GPS software, to help implement this software within a satellite navigation simulator (in collaboration with the SENER and Deimos companies), and study dependencies and optimizations for a future in-flight utilization. He/she is requested to have experience in:
- C, Python for prototyping
- Software development
Candidates should be Spanish citizens or be already resident in Spain with an active NIE number. The positions are for 1 year, with possible extensions +2 further years. They will be formalized by a full-time contract from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científica, and funded by a European H2020 ERC Consolidator grant. There will be a (relaxed) evaluation of performance every year, and a report (a couple of pages maximum) to be submitted to the European Commission. Given the current situation the first year might be in remote connection.
Regarding the workspace, if not remotely, it will be in the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE, CSIC) which is a modern building located in the Campus of the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, very well connected by public transportation with the Barcelona city center. The salary and benefits will have to be in accordance with the Spanish labor laws, and will depend on your experience and CV. The funding grant will also provide a laptop, accessories or justified material, which can be chosen and customized. Starting date would be as soon as possible, but can be discussed with the potential candidates.
Group activities will be in English (as are most Institute activities). One crucial strength of our group is the general relaxed and supportive interaction between all of its members. We expect you to join our spirit and have fun together during your research activities. More information about the group here: https://www.ice.csic.es/erc-magnesia/
