ESA CESAR

Cooperation through Education in Science and Astronomy Research

ICE-CSIC collaborates with the European Space Agency (ESA) CESAR project, co-organising  online training courses for teachers on topics related to space sciences. The training, which lasts 4 days, focuses on cutting-edge topics in astrophysics and space exploration and includes experts from both ESA and other collaborating entities.

The CESAR team organises the course in collaboration with the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) and in particular the Robotic Telescope Project (PETER), the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA), the Territorial Center for Innovation and Teacher Training of Madrid Oeste (CTIF Madrid Oeste), the Center for Training, Innovation and Educational Resources of the Valencian Community (CEFIRE Valencia), the City of Arts and Sciences of Valencia (CAC), the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE- CSIC), the National Astronomical Observatory and the Yebes Observatory and from Argentina, the National Commission for Argentine Activities (CONAE) and the National Teacher Training Institute (INFoD).

The first CESAR teacher training for the 2025-2026 academic year takes place in hybrid format on 24-27 November. The main theme is the Sun and Eclipses and Jorge Rivero, head of ICE-CSIC Communication and Outreach Office, participates as speaker in this course.

ESA-GTTP 2025 Teacher Training | ESAC - Villanueva de la Cañada

ICE-CSIC co-organises the ESA-GTTP 2025 – The Sun and Eclipses teacher training on 21-25 July 2025 at ESAC - Villanueva de la Cañada. This course, dedicated to the theme of The Sun and Eclipses, focuses on our nearest star and the upcoming solar eclipses that will be observable from the Iberian Peninsula in 2026, 2027, and 2028. The programme will combine lectures given by experts with practical workshops to learn how to design student projects using scientific data obtained by world-class missions.The training is organized by CESAR, the resident educational team at ESAC, and NUCLIO (coordinator of the Galileo Teacher Training Program), with the support of the team from the IAC (Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias), The Schools’ Observatory, ICE-CSIC and in partnership with the European School Innovation Academy (ESIA).

The third CESAR teacher training for the 2024-2025 academic year will take place in hybrid format on 19-22 May. The main theme is Space in the Classroom and Jorge Rivero, head of ICE-CSIC Communication and Outreach Office, will participate as speaker in this course with a talk about inclusive educational activities.

CESAR Teacher Training 2023-2024 | Space, a classroom for everyone

The last CESAR teacher training for the 2023-2024 academic year took place on 20-23 May. The theme of the course was showcasing equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives related to space and how teachers can introduce these topics in the classroom. Jorge Rivero, head of ICE-CSIC Communication and Outreach Office, participates as speaker in this course discussing his experience on the topic and the participation of our institute in the Amanar project that shares astronomy with Sahrawi refugees.

CESAR Teacher Training 2023-2024 | Black holes

The course programme focused on a journey through the fascinating science of black holes, from basic notions to cutting-edge research such as the science behind the first images of black holes. All of this is accompanied by demonstrations on how to bring these topics to the classroom. Mar Mezcua, researcher at ICE-CSIC and IEEC, and Jorge Rivero, head of ICE-CSIC Communication and Outreach Office, will participate as speakers in this course.
