The Amanar Project aims to inspire girls and boys from the Sahrawi refugee camps near the city of Tindouf (Algeria) through astronomy. The project was created in 2019 by the science outreach initiative GalileoMobile with participation from former ICE-CSIC member Fabio del Sordo and current member Jorge Rivero.
With the support of local associations and NGOs supporting the Sahrawi community as well as local astronomical institutions, Amanar organises a summer programme of astronomical activities for Sahrawi children spending the summer with host families in Spain under the framework of the Vacaciones en Paz programme. The summer programme is organised in seven Spanish regions: Canary Islands (Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria), Madrid, Granada, Valencia, A Coruña, Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela. In addition, the Amanar team has visited the Sahrawi refugee camps twice in October 2019 and May 2024. During these visits, Amanar organised practical activities for students, teacher training and star parties for the entire community. In total, Amanar has reached more than 1,200 Sahrawi children and young people and 100 teachers so far.
ICE-CSIC joined the programme in 2023 by starting the summer programme in Barcelona and participating in the visit to the Sahrawi refugee camps in 2024.
